Horizons closing senior meal sites

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Some seniors are losing their lunch spot.

Wednesday Horizons, A Family Service Alliance and the Heritage Area Agency on Aging announced the closure of senior congregate meal sites in Ely, Hiawatha, Marion, Springville and St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. The meal sites are part of the Meals on Wheels program. The services will end Wednesday, April 30.

Representatives with Horizons say the closure is due to a $200,000 budget cut. They say that equals about 35,000 meals.

Seniors at the meal sites contribute as much as they can towards the cost of their meal. Horizons officials say that the program cannot turn seniors away from the meal sites. However, seniors have not been able to contribute as much money in recent years due to rising other costs, like utilities.

Seniors who are home bound can qualify for Meals on Wheels delivery. That program will not see any cuts.
