Victims' Rights Week kicks off with opening ceremony

Posted: Updated:

Crime victims, survivors and their families came together for the victims' rights opening ceremony in Cedar Rapids Sunday afternoon.

The ceremony kicks off National Crime Victims Rights Week.

City leaders and advocates of victims' rights came to focus on the need for justice while helping those impacted cope with the aftermath of crime.

They also addressed some problems for services who help victims.

"I lost my son in 2000," said Victims' rights Board president, Sally Eggleston. "He was on a bicycle and was hit by a drunk driver, it broke his neck and he was brain dead. And that's what got me involved in this and most of the people here."

She says that's when she became involved.

Victims and their families shared personal stories and experiences.
