90-year-old honored for her dedication to volunteering

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A 90-year-old Cedar Rapids woman was honored as Iowa's Outstanding Senior Volunteer Sunday.

Dorothy Nemecek says for decades she's always been a sociable person, and never looked at her dedication to community service as volunteering.

Nemecek gives her time at her church, the VFW, and several other organizations.

She says she just feels good doing it, and it's the people that keeps her spirits high.

"I tell everybody, I just take it one day at a time and live it to the fullest," said Nemecek. "It's the people that keeps you going, they're just a joy to be around."

Nearly 100 people celebrated with Nemecek at the VFW Post 788 in Cedar Rapids.

In 2008, her home was flooded and all her belongings were lost, but she continued to dedicate her time to giving back.

A home health care company chose Nemecek for the award and donated $500 to VFW Post 788 in recognition for her contributions.

She is also in the running for the National Senior Volunteer of the Year.

That person will be named later this month.
