Eastern Iowa farmers gear up for planting crops

Posted: Updated:
DUBUQUE COUNTY (KWWL) -

Farmers all across eastern Iowa are gearing up to plant their crops in the coming weeks. Matt Heitz is a corn farmer in Dubuque County. He said he hopes to prepare the ground this week for his crops. He said although it has been a long, cold, and snowy winter, he expects good growing conditions.

"The ground is still cold and wet so we do have a ways to go there, but we are getting there quickly," Heitz said Sunday.

He said due to the colder weather this fall, he expects to do more fertilizing for his crops this spring.

"We are a little bit behind in that respect. We usually do a lot of fertilizer application in the fall, but that wasn't done. There is some tillage that is done in the fall, that wasn't done. (This spring) Some of the tillage may be shortcut and maybe some of the fertilizer application. It's going to be busy," Heitz said.

Tim Daly grows soybeans on his family farm in Dubuque County. He said ground conditions are looking good for planting in the beginning of May.

"I think the ground will work really well with the frost that's in the ground. It heaves it up and breaks it up. We don't have a lot of excess moisture, so I think the ground will really be in good shape this spring when it's time to plant," Daly said.

Both farmers said they are optimistic they will have good crops this coming season.

"In the spring we always expect a good season. You can even have a few things go wrong and still have a good season, but that is the fun part about spring - anything is possible," Heitz said.
