Black Hawks capture Anderson Cup, defeat Cedar Rapids in shootout

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - Once they reached overtime, the Waterloo Black Hawks already picked up the one point they needed to win an outright Anderson Cup championship.  Getting the shootout victory was just the icing on the cake.
It took 9 shootout rounds before Waterloo's Jake Horton finally scored to give the Black Hawks the 3-2 victory over their rivals from Cedar Rapids.
Waterloo had already clinched a share of the USHL regular season title with their 5-1 victory over the Roughriders on Friday, but it would take one more point to pull ahead of Indiana and win the title outright.
It wasn't easy.  The Black Hawks fell behind Cedar Rapids twice in the game until Peter Krieger scored the equalizer midway through the 3rd, which would eventually lead to the shootout.  Waterloo net minder Cameron Johnson turned away all 9 shots he saw in the shootout.  In the opposite net, Danny Tirone turned away the first 8 before Horton netted the game winner.
As the top seed in the Western Division, Waterloo will host 4th seeded Sioux Falls in the opening round of the playoffs beginning Friday night in Young Arena.
