CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) - Each year students at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls organize the Relay For Life of UNI.

Whitney Stoolman is a junior at UNI and the co-president of this year's event. She got involved with Relay For Life of UNI as a freshman.

"I'm from a very small town in northwest Iowa, and there are so many people in my hometown that have been affected by cancer. I have a list of people I relay for every year, and unfortunately it continues to grow. I think I have 45 people on it this year," said Whitney Stoolman.

Relay For Life of UNI begins Friday, April 11th at 6 p.m.at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls. It begins with an opening ceremony and survivor lap. The event wraps up at 6 a.m. on Saturday, April 12th.

"We have 55 teams and 350 participants signed up, but we usually get around 800 participants the night of," said Stoolman.

An executive team of UNI students begins working on the event as soon as school starts in the fall. The students hope community members turns out to support their efforts for the American Cancer Society.

"The support we get from the community for the UNI Relay is very important because it's a collegiate event. It's run strictly by college students that are all so busy with classes and trying to grow up, so it's important because we work so hard all year to plan a big event," said Whitney Stoolman.

Last year's Relay For Life of UNI raised $83,000 for the American Cancer Society. This year's goal is $90,000.

Again, you can register the evening of the event on April 11th at the McLeod Center.
