UPDATE: Family surprises soldier on return from Afghanistan

Posted: Updated:

Family members and friends of Grant McCready spent Friday preparing for the soldier's homecoming.

McCready recently returned from serving in Afghanistan. His family surprised him with the Patriot Guard in Elk Run Heights.

"I'm a little overwhelmed," Grant said. "Not used to the kind of stuff, but I'm happy to see everyone. It' good to see family and friends."

He is the cousin of Donny Nichols, who died while serving in Afghanistan in 2011.

McCready's parents asked the Patriot Guard Riders if they would be willing to offer a surprise escort for their son from Elk Run Heights to their home in Waterloo.

Ken Halter was happy to help. He spent Friday helping decorate the McCreadys yard.

"We put about ten stakes up," he said. "That'll fill this yard, make a nice display."

"Grant is the kind of kid -- hero -- young man -- that is going to be very humbled. He's not going to feel worthy, but when it's all said and done, he'll smile and say, 'Thank you,'" said Halter.

McCready's parents spent the day cooking up some of their soldier's favorite dishes, including beef burgers and baked beans.

The McCready parents have escorted dozens of soldiers home.

"This was a good one," Dan McCready said. "A happy one and it was our son so yeah there was a smile on my face.....This was a fun one.

McCready's parents said their son and his fiance, will be in Waterloo for 10 days and spend a lot of time planning their May wedding.
