CHARLES CITY (KWWL) -

One person is dead after a fire at an apartment building in Charles City.

The Charles City Fire Department was called to a report of a structure fire at 303 5th Avenue in Charles City at 2:40 p.m. Monday.

Firefighters arrived to find the front porch and entryway engulfed and were notified that a person was inside the complex.

Firefighters say "strong, gusty winds" helped spread the fire through the complex quickly.

Once firefighters knocked down most of the fire, they began an interior search, where they encountered a body inside one of the apartments.

The body was transported by ambulance to Floyd County Medical Center.

Investigators say the cause of the fire is under investigation but was likely triggered by discarded smoking materials onto a piece of furniture on the porch of the complex.

The complex was heavily damaged by fire, smoke and water.

The four-plex is owned by Linda Brant of Charles City.

The Charles City Fire Department was assisted by the Charles City Police Department, Floyd Fire Department, Colwell Fire Department, AMR Ambulance, Floyd County Search and Rescue, Floyd County Emergency Management, the American Red Cross, MidAmerican Energy and the Floyd County Medical Examiner's Office.
