Julien Dubuque International Film Festival details schedule

The third Julien Dubuque International Film Festival is approaching, running from April 23-27.

This year's honorary chair will be Abigail Breslin, known for her roles in movies such as Little Miss Sunshine, My Sister's Keeper, Ender's Game and August: Osage County.

The 2014 JDIFF will show more than 50 films at 12 venues throughout Dubuque. Four venues have been added since last year. Those are the Dubuque Museum of Art, Stone Cliff Winery, the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium and Five Flags Theater.

Festival organizers received more than 160 film submissions from all over the world, including from South Africa, Italy, China and Ireland.

Box offices will be at downtown Dubuque's Hotel Julien and the Holiday Inn, both on Main Street.

Festival organizers released the following schedule of the long weekend's events.

Film screenings will be 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday. Screening tickets are $8 each and they go on sale at www.julienfilmfest.com on Tuesday, April 8. Box offices open on Monday, April 21.

Wednesday, April 23:

“Field of Dreams” 25th Anniversary Screening at the University of Dubuque’s Heritage Center. There will be a reception at 5:30 p.m. and the film starts at 7 p.m.

Guests will include Brian Frankish, executive producer of “Field of Dreams,” Dwier Brown, who played John Kinsella in the film, and Sue Riedel, the film’s local casting coordinator and location scout.

A panel discussion will begin at 9 p.m. Tickets are $25 and available at julienfilmfest.com or https://www.dbq.edu/fineperformingarts/heritagecenter.

Thursday, April 24:

7 p.m. Opening Night Event at Five Flags Theater.

Guests will be be able to meet filmmakers, celebrity guests and the honorary chair, Abigail Breslin, as well as hear about her causes.

An after party will be at 9 p.m. at the Riverboat Lounge at Hotel Julien.

Friday, April 25:

7 p.m.: Silent Film Showcase at Five Flags Theater, featuring the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

The event will feature the Harold Lloyd film, “Safety Last!” The Dubuque Symphony Orchestra will perform the original score under Maestro Rob Tomaro, the conductor of the Beloit Janesville Symphony.

The event will also feature the work of Wahlert Catholic High School freshman Michael Banwarth, winner of Northeast Iowa School of Music’s Student Silent Film Score Contest.

Saturday, April 26:

7 p.m.: Red Carpet and Award Gala at Five Flags Theater. Reception and red carpet walk begins at 5:30 p.m. An after party is at 9 p.m.

New this year is an outdoor red carpet walk, weather permitting. The red carpet will be rolled out between Holiday Inn and Five Flags.

More than $30,000 in cash prizes awarded to winning filmmakers in categories including: Best Documentary, Best Director, Grand Jury, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Music, Best Short, Best of Iowa and Audience Choice.

The event is hosted by Los Angeles comedian Rell Battle.

Sunday, April 26:

6 p.m.: Closing Party at Stone Cliff Winery, 600 Star Brewery Drive.

The event is free and no ticket is required.

A short film, “Fug Sweater,” by the festival’s title sponsor, Momentum Productions, will be screened at the event.
