The filing deadline for individual tax returns is now about two weeks away, on April 15.

There is free help available for people still working on their taxes.

The AARP Foundation's Tax-Aide is a free tax preparation service, and it's not just for seniors.

All throughout eastern Iowa are locations where anybody, especially low- to moderate-income individuals, can find help with their taxes completely free of charge.

Rose Brimeyer is one of the nearly 2,000 people AARP Foundation Tax-Aide helps every year in Dubuque.

"It's been eight years that I've been coming down here," Brimeyer said Monday afternoon at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Dubuque, one of the city's two AARP Tax-Aide locations.

Brimeyer is on a fixed income. She said paying $100 or more for an accountant or other tax preparation service just isn't in her budget.

"It's a whole lot easier just to be able to come down here, being disabled and not having much income," Brimeyer said.

All the tax preparers here are volunteers. 79-year-old Herman Nauman is one of them, though most people call him "Boots."

"That's been my nickname since I was a little kid," Nauman said.

He's been volunteering his time with AARP as a tax preparer for 25 years, helping hundreds of low-income individuals and making life easier for people who find filing their taxes a daunting task.

"Some of them just don't understand it at all, you know. If they had to do their taxes themselves, they would never be able to do them. That's the reason they come here," Nauman said. "All they want to do is bring their papers here, have us figure it for them, they either pay or they get a refund check and they're happy."

While many clients are low- or moderate-income individuals, Nauman said he wouldn't turn anybody away.

"The people are just grateful," Nauman said, reflecting on why he keeps volunteering, tax season after tax season. "There's nobody comes in here, acts like we're not doing them a favor."

It is said that nothing is certain but death and taxes. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide helps make one of those a little easier.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is offered in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service. Nationally, the service has helped nearly 50 million people with their taxes since its start in 1968.
