Annual Warrior Challenge brings hundreds of runners

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The 3rd Annual Warrior Challenge kicked off Sunday in Iowa City.

The 4-mile obstacle race brought about 500 civilians, active duty and veterans together for an obstacle course designed similar to what's done in military training.

The runners had to climb stairs at Kinnick Stadium, carry 20 pound sandbags, and a variety of low crawl challenges, but runners say it's the benefit part that makes all the difference.

”That's really important,” said Carol Meade. “I've done a lot of races over the last few years and I’ve started to look for races that are for a good cause and it just makes it more rewarding.”

The University of Iowa Veterans Association sponsors the race.

This year the race raised at least $10,000, portions of which will be donated to organizations including the Fisher House Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House for injured veterans' families.
