WATERLOO (KWWL) - 18-year-old Tuliyah Frazier of Waterloo was recently named as "Youth of the Year" through the Boys and Girls Club of the Cedar Valley.

The Waterloo East High senior started coming to the Boys and Girls Club about six years ago.

"I've been coming here every day since sixth grade. I come here for homework help, and I volunteer with other kids," said Tuliyah Frazier.
Frazier said being at the club has changed her attitude for the better.

"I'm more positive. They've helped with my leadership skills because I've always been called a leader, so they helped me improve that," said Frazier.

Her leadership skills, her involvement in extra curricular activities, and her grades are just some of the reasons Frazier was chosen as the Cedar Valley Youth of the Year.

After high school graduation, Frazier plans to go to Kirkwood Community College and then transfer to the University of Iowa to study forensic pathology.

Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club, Chuck Rowe, is confident Tuliyah Frazier is ready for new challenges.

"She's a persistent person, so I know for a fact she's not going to give up. She's going to make a name for herself, and it's going to be because of her hard work. So we're really proud of her," Chuck Rowe.

The teen just competed for the State Youth of the Year title, she didn't get it, but Chuck Rowe said she has a lot to be proud of as an outstanding youth in the Cedar Valley.

Tuliyah Frazier was raised by her grandmother, but she also considers everyone at the Boys and Girls Club her family.

"I'm gonna miss them a lot," she said.

Tuliyah Frazier plans to come back during the summers to keep volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club of the Cedar Valley.

Frazier is also passionate about singing, and sings the national anthem at numerous events. In school, she was involved with dance.
