Hillshire plant to reopen after fire

Employees at the Hillshire Brands turkey plant in Storm Lake, Iowa may not go back to work for several months, but they will be able to keep their pay and benefits during that time.

Group HR Manager Tim Steffen confirms that it will take a minimum of three months to rebuild the part of the plant damaged when a 50 by 50 foot section of the roof caved in during a fire last weekend.  However, another official said they haven't put an exact time frame on how long it will take.

The company says during that time the entire plant will be shut down.

Steffen says the company will use this opportunity to improve the design of the production floor.

He confirms that the fire broke out in the dark meats department, but says a cause has still not be determined.

Steffen says Hillshire CEO Sean Connolly spoke with managers this week about the decision to continue to pay the roughly 600 employees who work at the Storm Lake facility.

The announcement was then made via video to the Hillshire employees.
