Hundreds of teens get prom dresses for $10

WATERLOO (KWWL) - Hundreds of Eastern Iowa high school students snagged quite a deal on a prom dress over the weekend.

The Junior League of Waterloo-Cedar Falls held its annual "Prom's Closet" fundraiser on Friday and Saturday where the organization sold more than 200 donated prom dresses for $10 each.

The dresses were sold on Friday and Saturday. Shoes and accessories were also available.

Organizers said they hold the event every year in an effort to make prom dresses available for girls who otherwise not be able to afford them, or for girls who just don't want to spend a lot of money on one.

High school students like Cassidy Haugh of Nashua appreciated the efforts from the organization. Haugh said she hoped to find a blue ball gown from a prom she's attending with a friend in Illinois next month.

"It helps people who might not have a lot of money to spend on dresses, or if you just don't want to. There are some dresses that are $500. Well if you come here, somebody who wore that dress you can get it for like 10," she said.

Organizers with the Junior League of Waterloo-Cedar Falls said they collect prom dress donations for the "Prom's Closet" event every January and February. However, they said if someone couldn't wait until next winter to donate, they would make accommodations.

Proceeds from "Prom's Closet" will go to the organization to support its mission of volunteering and improving the community.
