Help the Northeast Iowa Food Bank "Combat Hunger" this weekend

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - Helping the Northeast Iowa Food Bank "Combat Hunger" is as easy as one or three.

"You can give the volunteer a donation, you can buy food and give volunteers that food donation, or when you're checking out you can either add $1 or $3 to your grocery bill and that all goes to the food bank," said Northeast Iowa Food Bank Executive Director Barb Prather.

Participating stores include Hy-Vee and Fareway locations in Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Evansdale, and Waverly. As well as Hometown Foods in Waterloo and Randall's Stop 'n Shop in Hudson.

"We have a great partnership with the food bank, so we really enjoy working on this and helping the community," said Chad Launderville with Hy-Vee. Combat Hunger is going on now through about 6 p.m. Sunday at most participating locations.

"We expect it to be very busy this weekend, and we anticipate some great donations," said Launderville.

Barb Prather with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank said this is a big fundraiser.

"It's a pretty significant event. We raise a lot of money in a few short days that help us continue to stock the food bank," said Prather.

The Northeast Iowa Food Bank in Waterloo serves an estimated 40,000 different individuals. Of those people, 10 percent are seniors and 40 percent are children.
