Concerns come out at forum on U. of Iowa efficiency

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - The Board of Regents is looking to cut costs at the state's three public universities -- and some are concerned.

They are paying Deloitte Consulting LLP more than $2.4 million to do a study and audit of the universities.

Friday, the consultants heard concerns during a public forum at the University of Iowa.

Some fear cutting costs will mean cutting jobs.

"We're going to continue to look at those numbers and the efficiencies and how that rolls out and we're cognizant and we're sensitive to that," said Bruce Rastetter, Board of Regents President.

"What is the university for, right?" said Cathryn Lucas-Carr, Local 896 COGS President. "Are we here to be as efficient as possible, or are we here to give students a quality education?"

Critics also say that this study is happening too quickly and that an hour for public comment wasn't long enough.

However, there will be forums at each of the other state universities and there's a survey available online.
