Cresco native honored with statue at U.S. Capitol

Posted: Updated:
The statue of Cresco native Norman Borlaug was unveiled at 10 a.m. at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, what would have been Borlaug's 100th birthday.

Lawmakers, members of the Borlaug family and Gov. Terry Branstad all participated in a dedication ceremony to welcome Borlaug to his new permanent home at the National Statuary Hall.

"Norman Borlaug has brought together the leaders of this country, Democrats and Republicans working together, to recognize and honor a great man that made a real difference," said Branstad.

Borlaug is credited with saving more lives from starvation than any other human being after spending decades in Mexico where he cross-pollinated wheat -- quadrupling the yields.

In 2011, lawmakers approved a committee to raise funds that would pay for an artist to design, create and install a statue in his honor.

The statue now joins 100 others that recognize some of the most notable U.S. citizens.
