Drunk driver sentenced in fatal motorcycle crash

Posted: Updated:
JESUP (KWWL) - A man arrested after a drunk driving crash that killed a Jesup woman learned his fate Monday.

Bryan Cornwell was sentenced to 32 years in prison for the incident that happened in June, but he could be eligible for parole after serving seven years.

Authorities say Cornwell was driving a pickup when he collided with a motorcycle driven by Derek Martie. Authorities say he also drove away from the scene.

Passenger Katlyn Leekley died in that crash.

Martie was on life support when his girlfriend, Leekley, died.

"We have to look at pictures of her. This is all we have left," said Jennifer Tronca, Leekley's mother, in her impact statement to Cornwell.

Martie also addressed Cornwell Monday, but his mother read his impact statement.

"I never got to say goodbye or tell her I loved her one last time," said Martie.

Martie said he's blind because of the accident, and therefore lost his job.

Cornwell sat quietly in court Monday, but when he addressed the court he said he will never forget about the deadly crash he caused.

"I just want you all to know that I'm sorry for everything with all my heart. I mean it. I know nothing that I do will ever make this right," said Cornwell.

Martie says he lost the love of his life in that accident and he would give anything to be able to see again, but hopes Cornwell will embrace a second chance if he gets it.

"Learn from your mistakes," Martie said. "This is a horrible one, but just make his life better once he gets out, once he gets that second chance. Some people don't."
