Cheers and beers at Cyclones watch party

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

It was all cheers and beers as dozens of alumni watched the Cyclones take on North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament in Cedar Rapids.

"I think we're honestly going to take Georges off the bench, put a big old shoe on him that's going to fit and put him out there," said Iowa State University Alumni Jon Tangen. "We'll pull through this baby, go State! Cyclone power!"

However, there was no need for Georges Niang.

At first fans thought losing him to a broken foot would have a major impact on the Cyclones’ hopes of taking the win, but injured Niang didn't stop a thing.

Many called Deandre Kane a hero as his lay-in with just under two seconds to go in the second half, propelled the Cyclones past UNC.

Craig Adamson, the Linn and Johnson County alumni president, said he already expected the win, even without Niang.

Iowa State University Alumni Association of Linn and Johnson Counties put on the watch party at the The Fieldhouse in Cedar Rapids.

There are well over over 4,000 ISU alumni just in Linn County alone, and another couple thousand in Johnson County.

"So when there's an opportunity to get together and watch the Cyclones, and wear your colors and show off your license plate and that kind of stuff, just to stir things up with your neighbor a little bit," said Adamson. "Really excited because we've got the spotlight. As far as I can tell we're the only team in the state that's playing in the men's basketball tournament."

The Cyclones play UConn in New York City Friday night.

That's another expensive travel destination, so most Cyclones fans will once again be in front of a TV next week.

"We're just proud Cyclones, so proud. Coach Rhodes proud," said Tangen.
