Boy Scouts go scouting for food

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Many eastern Iowa Scouts are doing their part to help feed the hungry. Saturday, the Boy Scouts Northeast Iowa Council held its annual Scouting for Food Drive. During the week, Scouts distributed more than 35,000 door hangers around their communities to encourage residents to leave nonperishable food items out to be picked up Saturday.

Saturday, Scouts and volunteers collected those nonperishable food items. The Scouts also had a drop off location for donations at Hy-Vee on Dodge Street in Dubuque. At that location, other Scouts and volunteers sorted all the items collected. The items collected will provide the Dubuque Food Pantry with six months' worth of food and also benefit various local pantries located in East Dubuque, Epworth, Dyersville, and Bellevue.

Doug Stahr is the chairman of the Scouting for Food Drive. He said the drive reminds Scouts how important it is to give back to their community.

"I think everybody wants to see their Scouts in the neighborhood climbing around, picking up stuff and doing the right things. It gives them some ownership of their city and makes them feel good when this process is done." Stahr said Saturday.

Last year, the Scouts collected just shy of their goal of 40,000 pounds of food. Stahr said this year, the Scouts hope to reach that goal.
