Iowa City man to stand trial in 2015 in beating death of toddler

IOWA CITY (AP) - A trial has been scheduled next year for a 22-year-old man accused in the beating death of a toddler in Iowa City.

Jorge Perez is charged with two counts of child endangerment resulting in death, according to the Iowa City Press-Citizen.

The trial is set for Jan. 6.

Perez and the child's mother, Mireya Balderas, are accused of beating to death her 20-month-old son, Marcus.

Police say Perez has acknowledged hitting the boy's head and face, stepping on his stomach, tossing him to the ground and slapping him.

Police say Balderas also said she'd struck the boy several times and held a pillow over his face on at least five occasions to get him to sleep.

Balderas has also pleaded not guilty. Her trial is scheduled to begin on April 22.
