Iowa DOT to discuss changes on U.S. 20 in Dubuque Co.

The Iowa Department of Transportation held a public information meeting Thursday to discuss proposed improvements along U.S. 20 in Dubuque County.

The improvements would be between Sundown Road and Northwest Arterial in Dubuque County.

Sam Shea, with the Iowa Department of Transportation, said the improvements come in as preparation for the Southwest Arterial Project.

Shea said the signalized intersection at Menards located on U.S. 20 in Dubuque will be removed.

"When we close that, we have to have a place to put the people," Shea said. "So we then shift those cars via Frontage Road up to the Old Highway Road intersection."

Shea said that led to the Iowa Department of Transportation to look into traffic operations at Old Highway Road, Northwest Arterial and Crescent Ridge Drive. Shea also said the improvements would help improve the road itself.

"The trucks tend to beat up the road and they wear out the road," Shea said. "That's more maintenance for us. The more trucks you put on the road, the heavier they are, the longer they are, the closer they are to the edge of the road, the (more the) road breaks down."

Shea says construction on some of these changes could begin in the next five to six years as construction on the Southwest Arterial Project is underway.
