Newcomers welcomed by Distinctively Dubuque

Posted: Updated:

A Dubuque course is helping newcomers learn all about the Key City. Distinctively Dubuque is a course that is open to all, but geared toward newcomers to the Dubuque area. The course meets once a week for five weeks to discusses Dubuque's arts and culture, recreation areas, things to do and more.

The course also serves as a way to meet new people. Katie Tharp moved to Dubuque six months ago from Iowa City. She said she got involved in the course to meet new people and learn more about what is going on in her community.

"I thought it would be a good way to get to know people around town and people who are new." Tharp said.

Krista Weitz serves is the logistics coordinator for Distinctively Dubuque. She said the organization has been around since the fall of 2010 and has had more than 400 participants.

"We want Dubuque to be a welcoming community and we want people with great talent to come and work in our community and we want them to stay because they fall in love with their employment and the community itself." Weitz said Wednesday.

Weitz said the course also serves as a way to introduce people to local businesses, which helps the local economy.

"They are trying places that they may not have tried before and we are trying to let them know about all kinds of opportunities within the community." Weitz said.

Since 2010, Weitz said the course has gained popularity. She said the next session is already booked up. The next session with registration available is in August.

"As far as I know, not many communities do a program like this and i have had calls in the past six months from other communities who have heard about this program, who want to adapt something similar because it's working so well here in Dubuque."
