House passes kidnapping legislation, moves to Senate

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

A bill that would give offenders tougher penalties in kidnapping cases that involve minors will move back to the Senate for final consideration after passing through the Iowa House with overwhelming support.

House legislators OK'd the measure Tuesday on a vote of 96-3.

As it stands after passing through the House, the bill would eliminate an earned-time credit that lowers an inmate’s sentence for good behavior as well as creating tougher penalties for those involved in kidnapping cases where the victims are 17 years old and younger.

The earned-time credit was kept in the original Senate version of the bill.
