WATERLOO (KWWL) - A Waterloo East High School senior was named the 2014 Youth of the Year for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Cedar Valley, and will now go on to compete for the state title.

Tuliyah Frazier, 18, was selected as the area's Youth of the Year among "several outstanding local youth" involved in Boys and Girls Clubs of the Cedar Valley, according to the organization.

"Tuliyah is a true example of an extraordinary young women recognized ... for her sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community," said Laura Kann, director of development for the local chapter, said in a release Tuesday.

Youth of the Year is the highest honor in the Boys and Girls Club organization and recognizes outstanding contributions to a member's family, school, community and Boys and Girls Club, as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome.

Frazier will travel to Omaha this week to compete for the state Youth of the Year title.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Cedar Valley, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, serves more than 700 youth per year, according to Kann.
