Dubuque police are investigating a report of shots fired in the downtown area.

At 10:11 p.m. Monday, Dubuque police responded to the area of Second and Main streets on a report of shots fired and a car crash.

Officers found a cab driver, who said he had been the victim of an attempted armed robbery inside his taxi. He said he fired his legally-carried firearm in self-defense.

A second cab driver in the area tried intervening and stopping the robbery by crashing his cab into the victim's cab, police say.

After a brief struggle with the two cab drivers, the suspect fled the scene. As of late Tuesday morning, police had not yet located the suspect.

Dubuque police Lt. Steve Radloff said the suspect and witnesses were not injured.

Police describe the suspect as a black man in his 30s, who was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt. Evidence found at the scene suggests me may be injured.

Anybody with information can contact the Dubuque Police Department at 563.589.4415.

A damaged #1 Green Cab was parked within the portion of Second Street police blocked off Monday night. Officers were using flashlights to search the ground in the alley behind the 100 block of Main.
