Klinge, Iowa girls all-time wins leader, resigns at Waukon

Posted: Updated:
WAUKON (KWWL) -

Gene Klinge has coached his final game.  The winningest coach in Iowa girls basketball history submitted his resignation when he found out administrators at Waukon High School would not be renewing his contract.

"The administration said the girls had lost confidence in me," said Klinge, "and that was the first that I was aware of anything."

Waukon went 8-12 in the coach's final season.  The losing record was just the 3rd in his 52 year coaching career.

Klinge's overall numbers are staggering. He spent 11 years at Waukon and 41 at West Central of Maynard amassing a total of 1,009 wins.  He's the only member of the 1,000 win club in Iowa. He also coached teams to the state tournament a total of 16 times, the last one in the 2010 season.

"The thing that kind of bothers me is I've been very proud of the success that I've had in coaching girls basketball, and now all of a sudden, it's not good enough," Klinge added, "Your best isn't good enough anymore.  I feel bad about that."

Klinge says he doesn't have any plans to seek another coaching position.

"It's been a good run for me, and I guess all good things have to come to an end."
