Senate pushes back vote on anti-bullying bill

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The vote on a bill in the Iowa Senate that would give schools better tools to deal with cases of bullying has been pushed back.
Republican Senator Mark Chelgren, of Ottumwa, requested Monday that the vote is delayed so he can draft an amendment; however, the Senate could pick up debate on the bill as early as Tuesday.
As it stands currently, the bill would create a broader definition of bullying, require parental notification of bullying instances, give school officials authority to deal with off-campus bullying cases and require that school officials receive training on how to deal with bullying.
Efforts to crack down on bullying in Iowa schools is one of Governor Terry Branstad’s priorities this legislative session.
