Waterloo student takes stand against dress code through Facebook

ELK RUN HEIGHTS (KWWL) - One Waterloo middle school student is taking a stand against his school district's dress code policy nearly two years after its implementation.

Bunger Middle School seventh-grade student Jay Turner says his stand against the dress code policy started after he got a detention for forgetting a belt.

"It kind of struck me how a belt, how they were cracking down on belts instead of doing bad things or doing stuff in the bathroom, doing stuff in class," said Turner.

In April, he started a Facebook page called, "Students to Stop Waterloo Uniforms." Turner says in two months, the page has gotten more than 500 members.

In a statement, Waterloo Schools says the school's goal is to provide a safe learning environment, and the dress code aligns with that.

Turner says that's not necessarily the case.

"The bullying, that's gotten a lot worse because if you don't wear a certain name brand polo or if you don't wear a certain kind of pants, then you'll get made fun of," said Turner.

Turner's mother agrees with her son about the dress code and says she's glad the page is a peaceful protest.

"They're using their freedom of speech and they're not boycotting uniforms or showing up and causing trouble in any way," said Sherry Turner.

The page now has more than 700 members and continues to grow. Turner hopes the school district will take notice of the discussion.

District officials say if someone has a complaint, they can always address it with the school board. So far, Turner has not done that.

Waterloo Schools began its district-wide dress code policy during the 2011-2012 school year. In June 2011, parents took the policy before an administrative law judge in Des Moines.

That September, the judge OK'd the dress code policy.
