SLIDESHOW: Dubuque dad turns funny phrases into artwork

Posted: Updated:
DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Nathan Ripperger knows every day can be a never-ending task taking care of four young sons.

"There is always something crazy going on, but it's a lot of fun," Ripperger said Sunday.

He also found while taking care of four children, sometimes he says some absurd phrases. He realized those phrases, when taken out of context, were even funnier:

"Get that toilet seat off of your head now."

"I'm not talking to you until you are wearing underwear."

"Stop riding that penguin, we are leaving."

Ripperger works for a small video production company with the University of Dubuque. He said it was a desire to expand his skills in graphic design that led him to create posters using these funny phrases.

He began making those posters two years ago.

"I just put them up on Flickr just so I could share them with other people," Ripperger said.

Since uploading those posters two years ago, they have gone viral on the internet. The posters can be seen on social media sites such as Pinterest and Flickr. The posters have also been sold as prints all around the world.

"It's been published in magazines in Australia, there was one in Germany, and there was one in England. But as far as online, it's everywhere," said Christine Walleser-Ripperger, Nathan's wife.

In total, Ripperger has 10 posters in his collection called "Things I've Said to My Children."

Each of those 10 stories has their own unique story. Take, for example, the poster with the phrase "No, the leprechaun is staying in my pocket."

"For Easter one year, we got a little leprechaun LEGO mini figure," Ripperger said. "Somehow, that figure made it's way to Easter Mass. So I am sitting in Mass and I notice that my sons are fighting over a little leprechaun. So I take it and I put it in my pocket. They boys kept saying 'no, no,' so I said, 'No, the leprechaun is staying in my pocket.'"

He said sales of the posters and other graphic design work on his Etsy.com site have taken off.

"I never expected it to be popular or go viral anything like that. I just did them for myself," Ripperger said.

Ripperger said since he first started creating the posters two years ago, he has not added any new posters. He said he is open to adding more posters in the future.
