Each Tuesday morning, Kenneth Cutts volunteers for the Northeast Iowa Food Bank in Waterloo. He drives a truck to pick up perishable foods, such as breads and pastries, to be distributed to the food bank's member agencies.
"There's lots to do, and it's not difficult work. It's rewarding work," said Kenneth Cutts.
Cutts got involved with the food bank several years ago after he retired.
"Ken is one of those volunteers that just stands out because he's always willing to help," said Northeast Iowa Food Bank Executive Producer Barb Prather.
Besides volunteering, Kenneth Cutts is also on the Northeast Iowa Food Bank Board of Directors.
"He's been instrumental in helping us with our capital campaign, finding us resources in the community, and just being a genuine supporter because he really sees the need," said Barb Prather.
Kenneth isn't the only Cutts who volunteers regularly. His wife, Patty Achey-Cutts, is a volunteer and on the board of directors for the Boys and Girls club of the Cedar Valley.
Once a week, the retiree meets with second through fifth grade girls to work on building character.
"A lot of it is talking. What are their hopes and dreams, how do we get there, and caring and respect for each other," said Patty Achey-Cutts.
Together, the Cutts are active in the Waterloo Downtown Rotary, which works closely with Refuge Belen in Nicaragua.
Patty Cutts is just one of many volunteers who makes diapers and puts together layette kits filled with some essentials for new mothers in Nicaragua.
The Cutts have actually visited Nicaragua nine times, most recently at the end of 2013.
Chuck Rowe with the Boys and Girls Club of the Cedar Valley said the Cutts are mentors in the community.
"Because I love the fact they want to help out the community. They're always giving 110 percent, and I think a lot of people my age should be looking up to them as how you should be living in the Cedar Valley," said Chuck Rowe.
The Cutts encourage others to get involved with the community and continue to make it a great place to call home.
The Cutts are also involved with their church, and Patty is part of the Community Foundation and Women and Philanthropy.
