DYERSVILLE (KWWL) -

Thousands made their way to Dyersville Saturday to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, just a couple of days early. Saturday, the 33rd annual Gaelic Gallop took place in Dyersville. The Gallop is hosted by Total Fitness in Dyersville. This year more than 500 runners signed up for the run.

Shelly Meyer lives in Dyersville and was eager to get the Gallop started Saturday morning.

"It's the best way to kick off St. Patrick's Day," Meyer said. "Because then you feel good all day long."

Jess Smith also lives in Dyersville. She was enjoying another Dyersville St. Patrick's Day tradition with her family, the parade.

"We have a bunch of friends that we come down to see and hopefully get some treats," Smith said about the parade.

The Dyersville St. Patrick's Day parade is in its 38th year and draws thousands to the area each year.

Karla Thompson is the executive director of the Dyersville Chamber of Commerce.

"It's huge. You never know from year to year how many people are going to show up and how many float entries we are going to have, but the weather is nice today (Saturday) so it's going to be a fantastic day," Thompson said.

Anne Reitzler is co-owner of Groovy Grounds Coffee Shop on Main Street in Dyersville. She said she notices an increase in customers during the St. Patrick's Day festivities.

"The number of people that come to Dyersville for all the activities is really tremendous for our business. It's one of our really good days out of the year," Reitzler said.

Reitzler said she also has another advantage - Groovy Grounds sits right along the St. Patrick's Day parade route.

"Depending on the weather, it's either a high season for smoothies or it can be really popular with the hot chocolates and the lattes if it is cold out," Reitzler said Saturday.

Reitzler said although it is nice to have an increase in business during the St. Patrick's Day festivities, it's also see old friends and meet new people.
