Wrestling championships bring economic boost to Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Wrestling fans are expected to flock to Iowa this weekend, meaning a boost in spending.

The NCAA Division III wrestling championships are being held at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

The Cedar Rapids Area Convention and Visitors Bureau expects wrestlers, coaches and fans will spend more than $800,000.

"It's going to impact not only the downtown area but hotels will be impacted as well as area restaurants and retail and filling stations," said said Mary Lee Malmberg, Director of Sports Tourism.

Many of guests will be from out of state -- and officials hope they return in the future.

"We hope that (what) we're doing is presenting a really friendly, kind of welcoming community, and certainly with all of the improvements in our community," said Malmberg. "I think that gives a lot of reasons why people should want to come back "

Sixty-five colleges have wrestlers in the championships. Only seven of those are here in Iowa.

More than 8,500 people are expected to attend.

The preliminary rounds begin Friday and the championships are on Saturday.
