CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The man accused of killing his parents with a machete was in federal court in Cedar Rapids Thursday afternoon.

Police say Gordon Lasley, Jr., killed his parents at their home on the Meskwaki Settlement in February.

On Thursday, a federal judge decided there is enough evidence to continue with the case against him.

Since Lasley has a lengthy criminal background, including assault convictions, the judge said the man should remain in jail.

Had Lasley been released from jail, he would have stayed with his girlfriend. The two have three children together.

However, Lasley's attorney was unable to reach the girlfriend to confirm she was supportive of the plan.

A small group was in the courtroom to support Lasley. One woman asked if she could speak to him and give him a hug but was told she couldn't.

Lasley did not make eye contact with the group. It is unclear whether these people were friends or relatives as they would not speak to reporters inside or outside the courtroom.
