CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - The Cedar Rapids Fire Department rescued a dog floating down the Cedar River on an ice chunk Tuesday night and returned her to her owner Wednesday.

Battalion Chief Brian Gibson says firefighters were sent to the area of Otis Road SE, near the Cargill plant, at around 7:17 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a report of a dog floating down the river on an ice chunk.

Gibson says they launched a boat carrying two firefighters and an animal control officer and were able to rescue the dog before it went over the roller dam, near the Sac and Fox Trail City Park.

The dog, named Veo -- a 2-year-old black and brown brindle with white on her chest and paws -- was reunited with her owner Wednesday, according to officials.

Michelle Corless contributed to this report.
