WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) -

The Smithsonian Board of Regents has named the University of Iowa’s former president as the new secretary of the world’s largest museum and research complex.
The announcement came Monday that Dr. David Skorton will take the position after a closely guarded six-month search.
Dr. Skorton, a cardiologist and currently the president of Cornell University, will replace Secretary Wayne Clough.
Clough will retire in October after six years of service.
Dr. Skorton served as UI’s president from 2002 to 2006; he’ll serve as the first physician to lead the organization and its 13th secretary since 1846.
The Smithsonian includes 19 museums based primarily in the National Mall of Washington D.C.
