Meskwaki man accused of killing parents appears in federal court

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Tama County man accused of killing his parents on the Meskwaki Settlement with a machete appeared in federal court Monday.

Wearing shackles and an orange jumpsuit, Lasley, through his attorney asked for preliminary hearing and detention hearing.

Gordon Lasley, Jr. is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of Gordon Lasley, Sr.and Kim Johnson Lasley inside their home in the 600 block of Meskwaki Road on the Meskwaki settlement in February 5.

During the federal court appearance, the federal magistrate read Lasley his constitutional rights.

The detention hearing is scheduled Thursday at noon in the U.S. District Court.

A preliminary hearing is also set at the same time to determine whether there is enough probable cause that a crime was committed.

If convicted, Lasley faces a possible maximum sentence of life in prison.
