RAGBRAI full route announced; Clarksville gears up for the big day

Posted: Updated:

With snow still on the ground, it may not look like it, but in roughly 130 days, cyclists will be making their way across Iowa for the 42nd Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa or RAGBRAI.

On Sunday morning, the RAGBRAI committee announced the full route, including the official pass-through towns.

Before cyclists hit the overnight town of Waverly, they will go though Greene and Clarksville, but this isn't the first time for Clarksville-- a town of about 1500.

The last time Clarksville was a pass-through town was 2010. Kendall Kielman, owner of Pete & Shorty's, was surprised to see it come though again so soon.

"Overwhelmed. We enjoy having RAGBRAI come though town," said Kielman.

Kielman says being a pass-through town certainly helps the restaurant and bar financially and says it will make a month's worth of sales in that one day.

"It's our biggest sales day of any day. We do have our Pioneer Days, but RAGBRAI-- for the short time they're here, they spend a lot of money," said Kielman.

This year, Clarksville RAGBRAI organizers say is going to be different from when they were a pass-through town in 2010.  That's because in 2010 they were a morning stop.

"Last time you're set up for ...breakfast and what have ya. In the afternoons...after they get this far, they've probably eaten quite a bit already throughout the day. They'll probably be more into the let's say the drinking crowd at that time," said Kielman.
