Neighbors 'not surprised' by Friday night's shooting in Iowa City

Neighbors living in the Pheasant Ridge Apartments in Iowa City say Friday night's shooting is not surprising.

Mahmood Eltyeb lives just across the street on from the shooting scene on the 2600 block of Bartelt Road.

Police say they responded around 11:50 Friday night after what appeared to be an altercation that led to shots being fired.

"We were getting multiple 911 calls of shots that have been fired, while officers were in route we had a report that we had at least one person that had been shot," said Sergeant Paul Batcheller, with the Iowa City Police.

The victim was taken to the hospital, but her name and condition are not being released.

Meanwhile, Eltyeb says there are several incidents that happen in the area that include violence.

"It's not totally safe to live here, either robbery, stick up, or shooting…," said Eltyeb. "Actually I am also trying to look for somewhere else to live, right now I'm looking for an apartment to live."

The Iowa City Police Department's Investigative Unit remained on the scene for more than 12 hours.

Police are still looking for the suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to call Iowa City CrimeStoppers at 319-358-8477.
