Waterloo West and Western Dubuque Advances at Girls State Tourney

Third ranked Waterloo West scored 30 of its 69 points and pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat seventh-ranked Des Moines East 69-57 to open the Class 5A tournament.

  Haley Puk led West with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Kate Letkewicz, scored 19 points and  Blaire Thomas scored 16. Sammie Sproul chipped in with 11 points and five assists as the Wahawks had four players in double figures and those same four also were the only West players to score in the game.

   West, in the tournament for the first time since 2003, will take a 22-2 record into Friday's semifinals against Southeast Polk. 

  In 4A Western Dubuque is in the state tournament for the first time in 27 years and the eighth-ranked Bobcats survived a late run by No. 2 Sioux City Bishop Heelan to post a 53-44 victory in an opening round game. This is Western Dubuque's first trip to state since it won the championship back in 1987 and the Bobcats are now in the semifinals.     

   Western Dubuque takes 22-2 record against No. 7 Ballard in a semifinal game at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
