CHARLESTON (WVVA) - A Bluefield, Va., teen continues to recover in a Charleston hospital after tragically breaking her neck while attempting a stunt made popular on social media.

Sabrina Armstrong, a ninth grader at Graham High School, was injured on Feb. 13, while attempting what is known online as the 'snow challenge.'

The stunt involves participants jumping into the snow while wearing little clothing. It's common for those who try the 'challenge' to share a video of their efforts on social media.

Armstrong and her friends saw the challenge on Facebook, and decided to try it.

The stunt may seem relatively harmless, but the underlying dangers can be life-altering.

When Armstrong attempted to jump into the snow at her home, she struck ice. Her C5 vertebrae was broken instantly.

Now, her family is unsure if she'll ever be able to walk again.

Armstrong is currently in ICU at Charleston Area Medical Center. She has shown improvement since undergoing surgery -- now breathing on her own and regaining movement of her arms.

Her family hopes with rehabilitation she can also regain use of her hands. Armstrong is expected to remain at CAMC for several more weeks.

Armstrong's mother, Carrie Hampton, hopes her daughter's tragic accident can serve as a warning to other teens who may view the online stunt as harmless fun.

Hampton says her daughter's dreams for the future -- which included playing high school football at Graham -- are now forever changed.

A fund has been established to help Armstrong and her family as she recovers. Those who'd like to contribute to the Sabrina Armstrong Benefit Fund can do so at any New People's Bank location.

Paypal contributions can also be sent to sabrinaarmstrongbenefitfund@gmail.com, the family says.

If you'd like to send a card or messages of encouragement to Sabrina, you can mail them to the following address:
