Government shutdown hits national parks system in the wallet

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, D.C. (NBC) - We now know how much damage the government shutdown did to our national treasures.

The Obama Administration says nearly 8-million fewer tourists visited the country's national parks and museums. The administration says the parks and local communities lost nearly $414-million due to the shutdown.

California and Arizona were among the states hardest hit. Officials estimate each state lost more than $20-million during the sixteen day shutdown.

Six states reopened their parks during the shutdown using state funds. Lawmakers are now looking at legislation that would reimburse those states.
