A northeast Iowa insurance agent who is accused of making fake life insurance policies pleaded guilty to mail fraud.
Monday, U.S. Attorney Kevin W. Techau said in a release that Melissa Williams, of Dike, will be arraigned soon in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids on one count of mail fraud.
She says that she had used the names of actual people on fake insurance applications between July 2011 and January 2012 as part of the plea agreement.
She admitted to paying in on the policies’ initial premiums, and she collected more than $170,000 from the insurance companies as advanced commissions.
Williams remains out on bond pending sentencing. She could face up to 20 years in prison.
