Eastern Iowa woman pleads guilty to defrauding insurance companies

A woman from Dike could spend up to 20 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to mail fraud Monday.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Melissa Williams, 46, defrauded two insurance companies out of more than $170,000 in sales commissions.

In a plea agreement, Williams admits that while she worked as a policy salesperson she fabricated life insurance applications and would secretly pay the initial premiums on the policies.  She says she fraudulently obtained $170,292.52 in commissions.

Sentencing has not been set.

Williams faces a possible maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment, a fine equal to the greater of twice the gross gain resulting from the offense, twice the gross loss resulting from the offense, or $250,000, a $100 special assessment, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
