Teens may be turned away from tanning salons in Iowa

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

With high school proms around the corner, dozens of people under the age of 18 will be flocking to tanning salons, but Iowa lawmakers are looking to ban minors, with or without parental consent.

The bill would also require salons to post and hand out written warnings to customers about the dangers of tanning.

Senator Jeff Danielson says he's against the proposed bill.

"It's good to educate, to inform, to have warnings and to provide those at the site where tanning would take place. But there has to be a role for parents and families to control their children's behavior. It doesn't necessarily need to be a government law," said Danielson.

The American Cancer Society of Black Hawk County wants the bill to pass.

In a statement, American Cancer Society Relay for Life Specialist, Kelly Angell says:

"For the past 30 years, the incidence for melanoma has been steadily rising, and more recently, it has been rising at a faster pace in young, white women and older men. It is believed that this increase is due to increased exposure of UV radiation as a consequence of changes in individual behavior with regard to solar UV and the use of indoor tanning beds."

She says they will continue to urge lawmakers to pass the bill in hopes to save more lives.
