2014 Maple Syrup Festival kicks off in Cedar Rapids

The 31st Annual Maple Syrup Festival at Indian Creek Nature Center is serving up syrup this weekend.

Eastern Iowans experienced the process of getting syrup from the tree to the table.

The festival is held the first weekend in March, bringing about 2,000 people to the Nature Center.

"It's just amazing to see that many people," said nature center executive director John Myers. "They come out for the great syrup and the pancakes, but they come to learn and many times the weather doesn't speak it, it's the beginning of spring and that's why we get so many people out."

Former Indian Creek executive director Rich Patterson retired Friday after 36 years on the job.

The Nature Center announced it plans to build a new outdoor amphitheater that will be named the Patterson Family Amphitheater.
