Loras College to celebrate "End the R-Word Week"

The Loras College student organization Du-Buddies will be hosting "End the R-Word Week" the week of March 3-7th.

The End the "R"-Word campaign calls for the elimination of the misuse of the word "retarded" and highlights the value of recognizing the humane dignity of each individuals.

This is the third year the initiative will take place at Loras College in Dubuque.

The Loras College events include:

Monday, March 3: "Participation"

Du-Buddies Families' Panel, Loras College Alumni Campus Center, Ballroom C, 8.-9 p.m.

Two Du-Buddies families will speak about their experiences and the importance of participating in activities that promote the dignity of others.

Tuesday, March 4: "Equality"

Dutalk, Loras College Alumni Campus Center, Arizona Room, 6-7 p.m.

This session will center on the idea of equality related to people with disabilities. It will involve roundtable discussion facilitated by representatives from Du-Buddies and Intercultural programs.

Wednesday, March 5: "Empowerment"

T-shirt Decorating, Loras College Alumni Campus Center, Ballroom A, 6-8 p.m.

Decorating and personalizing white t-shirts (bring your own!) with various craft materials to wear at the End the "R"-Word Week talent show.

Thursday, March 6: "Respect"

Prayer Service with social to follow, Christ the King Chapel, 6:30-7 p.m; Refreshments in Loras College Alumni Campus Center, Arizona Room, 7-8 p.m.

This service will be directed by Fr. Robert Gross and will include prayers, songs and reflections on friendship and respect.

Friday, March 7: "Socialization"

Du-Buddies Talent Show, Loras College Alumni Campus Center, Ballrooms A & B, 6-8 p.m.

This event will feature song/dance performances, art displays, and more from the Loras Du-Buddies members and supporting organizations.
