Iowa coaching legend Hayden Fry turns 85

WATERLOO (KWWL) - He's famous for one-liners, a classic pair of shades and revitalizing the University of Iowa football program -- and on Friday, Iowa coaching legend Hayden Fry celebrates his 85th birthday.

Fry's coaching career lasted 37 years, with 20 of those spent at Iowa. From 1979 to 1998, he brought the Hawkeyes 143 wins and 14 trips to bowl games; three of those were Rose Bowls.

He also clinched three Big Ten titles and transformed the University of Iowa into what some call the "Harvard of Coaching."

The Texas man, sporting cowboy boots and a Southern drawl, is known to most as a charismatic, folksy icon. One-liners such as "high-porch picnic" and "scratch where it itches" are now attached to his name.

Fry was indicted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2005.

A birthday celebration for Fry will be held Friday at the Coralville Marriott Hotel and Conference Center at 10 a.m.

Fry will make a few comments, and preliminary plans for FRYFest will also be announced, which is scheduled for Aug. 29.
