Winter weather washing away business for some car wash owners

Some car wash owners are saying this winter's cold, snowy and even rainy weather is washing away any business they are hoping to have.

Elmer Harter has owned University Car Wash Inc. In Dubuque for some 35 years. He said this winter has been tough for his business.

"This is probably the coldest winter that I have had in the 35 years I have been here." Harter said.

University Car Wash Inc. offers customers self-service car washes as well as one automatic car wash.

"I've got an automatic over here and I haven't even opened it up all week because the cold weather costs to much money to heat up the place and leave it on," Harter said Thursday.

Harter said business is dwindling due to the cold weather, which makes it tough on his businesses bottom line.

"It's been tough on business. It takes a lot of gas to heat the floors so they don't freeze up. We also have to leave a lot of water on so it doesn't freeze up and in the meantime there is just not enough business around." Harter said.

Harter said although he is taking precautions to prevent freeze ups at the car wash. He has had to deal with some frozen equipment.

"We have having a few freeze ups. Nothing major, but we have had a few freeze ups." Harter said.

Across town, managers at Miracle Car Wash on Locust Street said this winter's business is not so different from previous years. They said day-to-day business depends on the weather.

"We have weeks where we are busy and we have weeks where we are slow, it just depends." assistant manager, David Polkinghorn said Thursday.

Both Polkinghorn and Harter said they are excited for the warmer weather and summer months ahead.
