IOWA CITY (KWWL) - Sally Mason will continue on as the University of Iowa's president after a tense Board of Regents meeting regarding Mason's latest comments on sexual assault and ongoing communication issues between her and Regents members.

The Iowa Board of Regents discussed Mason's comments and communication issues for 20 minutes on Friday afternoon and then went into closed session to privately discuss her job performance for more than an hour.

PREVIOUS STORY:

University of Iowa president Sally Mason unveiled a 6-point plan to combat sexual assault on her campus during a call with Board of Regents members Friday afternoon.

The Iowa Board of Regents held a special telephone session with Mason after comments she made to the Daily Iowan last month regarding sexual assault caused controversy on the Iowa City campus.

Frustrations had risen after the University of Iowa's ninth sexual assault since the beginning of the school year.

Mason's plan, as detailed to the Board on Friday, included upping penalties for offenders, including expulsion; adding assault survivor services and extending existing services for victims of assault; and better informing the campus community at large when sexual assaults happen.

Mason also stressed that she was looking to further communication between her and the Board, citing "communication issues" going back and forth for the last two years.

The Board then went into closed session to discuss Mason's performance at 3:20 p.m.

PREVIOUS STORY:

The Board of Regents will hold a telephone meeting on Friday at 3 p.m. to discuss controversial comments made by the president of the University of Iowa.

According to the agenda, the purpose of the meeting is to "receive an explanation from President Sally Mason regarding her remarks on sexual assault."

Immediately following that meeting, the Board of Regents will go into closed session.

Sally Mason is currently working without a contract.

Students have held protests recently following comments Mason made to the student newspaper, The Daily Iowan. This comes after the university issued a series of "timely warnings," some made several days after the incidents, following sexual assaults on campus.

Mason is holding a listening session on Thursday evening to discuss sexual misconduct on campus.
